ATHLETES PERSPECTIVES

This event is exciting because is gives athletes the chance to race on a mostly pancake flat course for a personal record. The bike course hugs the side of huge mountains along the route provides excellent coverage from any strong cross winds, common to flat courses.

The swim course is perfect for spectators as they can walk along next to the swim course and follow all the action. Since this is a multiple loop course the spectators will have a chance to see their friends and family many times to offer their support.

ORGANIZERS NOTES

This event is an exciting one being is such a beautiful location and a great community full of wonderful volunteers.

One volunteer even took the time to pick fresh raspberries next to the aid station to give to the athltes.

EVENT SUGGESTIONS

Normally we encourage athletes to arrive a day or two early to check out the race venue and become comfortable with the climate. With this event we recommend you come early to enjoy a beautiful resort and relax for a few days. If you are planning a summer vacation around Harrison Mills. Fishing, Hiking and Golfing are among the most favored activities and the Sandpiper Golf Course is located close to the start finish area.

HISTORY

The Bigfoot Ironman Triathlon began 5 years ago and is gaining the reputation of being "The World Friendliest Iron Distance Triathlon."

The Ironman distance triathlon arrived over 20 years ago in Hawaii and began as a challenge of three renowned events; An annual 2.4 mile open water swim, a traditional 112 mile bike race and a the Honalulu Marathlon. A handful of athletes (around 6 or 7) combined all three to be completed the same day consecutively. They called it Ironman.

Ironman gained world wide attention in the 80's when Julie Moss stunned the world by crawling across the finish line, the image of her collapsing at the finish line sent a message to the world that this is a tough sport.

A remarkable feature of the Ironman is the fact that men and women compete on equal ground on the same course at the same time. Lori Bowden and Peter Reid a married couple from Canada have both won the Hawaii Ironman World Championship, and have also won Ironman events on the same day.

Lori Bowden had also placed in the top 10 overall at Ironman events and it is just a matter of time before a female will win a major Ironman competition.

There are now well over 30 Iron distance triathlons held annually around the globe. Around the same time as the Ironman beginning athletes stared combining swimming biking and running events introducing the sport of triathlon.

The actual order of the events came about as it was recognized that safety of the athletes was of paramount importance. Swimming being the most hazardous of the three sports traditionally goes first, cycling second and running third, often the run and the bike are reversed which is usually to accommodate a safer bike and run course.
